The Arc de Triomphe was built at the request of Napoleon and is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. Apart from the purely aesthetic reasons, due to the beauty of the building and the panorama offered over the capital, and more particularly the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe is also, and above all, an invaluable cultural landmark. Located on the former Place de l'Étoile (named after the twelve avenues that surround the monument and form a star), now Place Charles de Gaulle, the Arc de Triomphe was built at the request of the Emperor following the famous battle of Austerlitz (1805), considered to be Napoleon Bonaparte's tactical and military "masterpiece". The aim of the arch was to perpetuate the memory of the French army's victories. The foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1806, and the monument was completed 30 years later, in 1836. Before the enlargement of Paris in 1860, the land on which the monument was built was on the city's border, and offered privileged access to the Emperor's residence, the former Palais des Tuileries, via the Champs-Élysées. As well as being a memorial, the Arc de Triomphe was therefore also a spectacular gateway into the capital, built to welcome Napoleon and his troops back from battle. The Arc de Triomphe can be visited by day or night. While some prefer the 360° panorama offered during the day, others only have eyes for the spectacle of "Paris by night" and its magnificent lights.
